The Senate also last week gave final approval to what we have named the “Pain-Capable Act.”
It prohibits abortion in South Carolina at or beyond the twentieth week of pregnancy with the sole exception of severe fetal anomalies detected within that time frame.
This is a major step forward in the fight to protect innocent life, and I was proud to serve as a cosponsor of the Senate version of the bill. The bill will go to Governor Haley’s desk as soon as the House acts, and I hope that will be this week.
Passage of this law makes SC the 17th state to step up its defense of human life, and it is particularly important with the ongoing revelations that Planned Parenthood actually makes infanticide part of its business plan.
This is not the end of the fight, but it is a significant victory, and I’m thankful to have been a small part of it.
I’m too tired to explain, but I could be a poster child for there NEVER being a reason to abort a child to save the life of the mother. I would make an appointment to meet with you and come to Columbia tomorrow but am unable to do so for various reasons.
Hopefully this will be challenged in the courts as 20 week limit is against what the Supreme Court has declared Constitutional. Also, was the health of the mother excluded in the final bill? Know it was in the original. And why weren’t exceptions made in cases of rape and incest? Perhaps there would have been a champion for including those exceptions had one of a legislator’s daughters been impregnated duringrape or incest!
I also take exception to your use of “infanticide” when describing Planned Parenthood’s providing legal abortions within the Supreme Courts’ guidelines. That’s your opinion based, I assume, on your religious beliefs. You certainly have the right to your beliefs, but you do not have the right to base laws on them and forcethem on others in this State.
As I’ve said numerous times to you and other legislators, you will not eliminate abortion – you will only succeed in making it illegal and unsafe – especially for poor women and women of color. Why not focus on preventing unwanted pregnancies and need for abortion by providing broad access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education in our schools??
Thanks for all your effort Shane. This is something that is near and dear to my heart and I am so thankful SC has taken this step to protect these babies
Looks like another great step in the fight against abortion. Here’s my take and I have previously stated my stand on abortion in a letter to the editor. It matters not to me whether a fetus develops as a result of rape, incest or mutual consent that baby deserves a life. Why should a baby in the womb be murdered because of a misdeed of one or both parents? If either parent rejects the child, it can be placed for adoption. Abortion, at any stage, should be illegal.
