I trust that most of you are aware of the recent developments concerning DSS and particularly the resignation of its director a few days ago.

I am saddened and deeply troubled that it took so long for the director and the governor (who appoints the director) to understand that almost no one had any confidence in the agency as more and more details emerged about the operation of the agency and its effect on families and children. I spoke several times on the Senate floor about the unacceptability of the status quo at DSS, and I am at least hopeful that the resignation of the director opens the door for a new start. I believe that nothing is a more important function of government that the protection of the defenseless, especially children.

I will do my best to continue to hold DSS, and the governor, accountable for its actions in the future.
